‘Rocky Tomtit' - The Snares

The reference photo for this print was taken at The Snares, an island group south of Stewart Island named because they looked like a major shipping hazard! Although it is only small, there is an endemic snares tomtit perching on the rocks amongst the seaweed. The Snares tomtit is a gorgeous, completely black bird which differs from its main island counterparts which have a cream belly. I think this picture is unique as well because as you may know, the tomtit isn’t a seabird but was chilling amongst all its marine friends down by the shore to check out all these strange people in their boats. This piece was created as a triptych with ‘Rocky Kekeno’ and ‘Rocky Penguins’ to create a series titled ‘Rockpool Rendezvous’.
